While mold was costing a fire house in Chattanooga some $25,000, the bed bugs were biting more than $30,000 off fire stations in Norfolk.
The vampire-like pests’ feast in the city’s fire houses started mid-October. Initially, they were found in just three of them. However, the discovery of them prompted a department-wide inspection. And following that, two more stations were found to be infested by them.

The infestations in the five fire houses pushed the Virginia Beach Fire Department to tighten its SOP in preventing the crawlies. Battalion Chief Amy Valdez shared that her department was wrapping up a training video for the staff. The video would basically teach firefighters how to prevent and inspect for bed bugs.

In light of this bed bug case, the fire departments in Suffolk and Newport News were also taking preventing measures to keep the pests off their fire houses.
