Cockroaches are always pictured to be in houses, restaurants and other food-related establishments. But they could actually be anywhere as long the place offers them warmth, moisture, food and darkness.
Because such place could also be found in schools, cockroaches could also infest campuses. And based on a recent report, that’s what almost happened to Fonda-Fultonville schools.
The insects were said discovered in late July in a number of campuses in the Fonda-Fultonville School District. Particularly, they were found in three elementary school cafeterias, one teacher’s break room and three more classrooms often used during snack times.
Fonda-Fultonville Superintendent Raymond Colucciello said that the district’s problem with cockroaches fell short to being a full-blown infestation. But to resolve it, the administration hired a pest-control company. So, for the last two weekends, the affected rooms were treated. And as specified, another one will be implemented on Saturday.
But saying that cockroaches could easily hitch a ride on kids’ bags, staff of affected schools also sent letters to parents. The letters asked them to do post-school roach searches on their kids’ belongings.

“In all of his 53 years in the education business, Raymond Colucciello didn’t see a cockroach. That is, until he took the reins of Fonda-Fultonville Central School District.
“I dealt with plenty of rodents,” he said, “but never roaches.”
Cockroaches were sighted in late July in the Fonda-Fultonville school buildings. At first, district officials thought it might be a relatively small issue, but an investigation said otherwise.
Colucciello couldn’t say exactly how many cockroaches there were, except that the problem fell short of a full-blown infestation, but was “at such a level we needed to mitigate.”
