October of last year, New York was swamped by Hurricane Sandy. Lives of the people were put at risk and several houses and establishments were damaged. But the problems it brought didn’t just end when the water receded. No thanks to mold, even until today, it has been causing a headache to the residents.
A few months after the super storm made its hit, mold problems started to sprout in houses affected by the flooding. But while others returned to their damaged homes and worked on the cleaning of the infestation, others decided to let nature take its course. Now, those abandoned homes became mold’s incubators. And needless to say, that troubles the residents.

One particular area in New York where there are several deserted houses invaded by mold was the 12 Topping St. A press conference was held in there by Congressman Michael Grimm to bring into attention the state of the houses and the threat they present to the resident’s health.
However, the health department stands that those houses are not a public threat. And because its permission is needed for the mold clean-up to commence, the homes currently remain deserted and fostering mold presence.

“The house at 12 Topping St., has been abandoned since the storm surge from Hurricane Sandy inundated it and swaths of Staten Island’s shorefront communities. Its windows have been boarded up and weeds now claim the front lawn. It is just another ugly relic of a storm that rocked the East Coast and shut down the financial capital of the world seven months ago.
But danger didn’t leave as the waters receded back into Lower New York Bay. Some residents returned to clean up and rebuild, while others conceded to nature and never returned, leaving their waterlogged homes behind amid a community struggling to recover.”

Many think that mold is harmless. However, a number of its species are serious threats to health. And given that it’s highly likely that some of them are growing in those abandoned houses, it is understandable why Topping St. residents are troubled.
But you should know that flooding is not the only thing that could trigger mold infestation. Any kind of exposure of a surface or item to moisture could actually encourage the spores’ growth. Hence, your home is always vulnerable to their infestation.
That doesn’t mean though that there is nothing you could do to prevent it. There are specific steps that you could take to decrease the possibility of your home being infested. But generally, what you have to do is to always keep your place dry.
Do-It-Yourself Mold Treatment VS Mold Exterminator
But say your house was already mold infested before you know it, what then should be your next step?
In that case, you first need to determine the severity of the problem. Find out where the infestation is and if it’s not more than 10 square feet, then you have the option to do the mold treatment by yourself. If otherwise, it’s best that you hire a mold exterminator.
But supposing your mold problem is not more than 10 square feet, which is the better choice – hire an exterminator or do the DIY mold removal?

Well, money-wise, personal mold treatment is the better option. If you don’t mind doing a bit of spraying and a little brushing, then you should go for it. Besides that, with the right mold removal product, it could deliver you a result as good but not as expensive as mold contractors could offer.
