Mold was discovered in one of Connecticut’s busiest libraries – Fairfield Woods Branch Library. And with the books at the risk of ruin and more importantly, the patrons and employees at the threat of being sick, the management decided to close it for treatment.
The discovery of the fungus came following the replacement of the library’s flat roof. The work was due to the leaks, which most probably were the cause of the mold growth in the building.

As it was specified, the mold was discovered in November 04 in the basement of the library. Particularly, it was found in the sheetrock walls of its the mechanical/furnace room. Access to the area was immediately restricted following the discovery.
The library will be closed for the remediation treatment starting November 18. It was scheduled to reopen on Saturday, November 23.

Though the first-floor patron area of the branch library was not reached by mold, deputy librarian Nancy Coriaty said that even employees would not be allowed into the building in the course of the mold treatment. The book drop-off area will be shut down as well and the branch staff will temporarily work at the main library. And so, for the meantime, materials due to be returned during the closure will be accepted at the main branch at1080 Old Post Road. Fines will also be waived for others who couldn’t return them there.
