Mold made victims out of yet more schools. This time, it caused trouble in the Tri-City campuses of Buffalo in Illinois.
The fungus was initially discovered in the school district last summer. Custodial workers particularly found it in the girls’ locker room located in the basement of the 1938-built section of a building. That then led to its discovery in many other areas of the structure.
Because of that, school officials were not able to use the heating systems of the campus since their clean-up two weeks ago. And until the lab tests confirm that they are truly safe, School Superintendent H. David Bruno, said that they would not take the risk.
Temporarily, portable heaters were used in the building to warm the staff and the students. But with the expected drop of temperature on Tuesday and Wednesday, they reckoned not to be enough to counter the low temperature. However, instead of using the units, as a precautionary measure, classes were canceled instead for two days.
Classes were scheduled to resume on Thursday. On the same day, the heaters in the elementary school were set to be turned on. Meanwhile, the heating units in junior and senior high schools were expected to be ready for use the following week.

“Classes for Tri-City School District students are canceled Tuesday and Wednesday as an ongoing battle with mold prevents officials from turning on the school’s heating systems.
Parents were notified of the two-day cancellation in a recorded message sent out Monday morning via the district’s SchoolReach notification system.”
