Bed bugs found a way into New York’s Department of Financial Services. And needless to say, they were causing quite a stir among the employees.
But this bed bug problem wasn’t actually unique to the building. Earlier this year, before the transfer of some employees from 25 Beaver St, the critters were already troubling the department. Senior Insurance Examiner Ademola Oluwo showed a memo proving that.
However, though it was indicated in the memo that the issue was solved before the move, it appears that not all bed bugs were eliminated back then as they were again recently spotted in the building. Oluwo, who caught one of the critters as a proof of their presence, said that he was even bitten by them in the arms. Another employee, Verna Fulton, also shared that she got bed bug bites on her shoulder.
Nonetheless, Matt Anderson, DFS spokesperson, said that there was no evidence of the vampire-like pests taking over the building, although they have recorded two bed bug cases. Despite that, he stated that they were taking the necessary steps and would continue to do so to make that the problem is resolved.
Even so, the employees were not satisfied with the actions taken. According to Fulton, the officials should get the whole building treated in one go than cleaning it area by area.

“I said, ‘What on earth? We’re getting eaten alive in here!’” said Fulton, an IT worker for the agency, which moved more employees into offices at 1 State St. earlier this year.
Another bitten worker, Senior Insurance Examiner Ademola Oluwo, told the Daily News he obtained internal agency memos showing the State Street problem wasn’t new.”
