University of Minnesota has encountered its worst mold problem yet. And because of it, several students had to move out of their Frontier Hall dormitory last weekend.
The assistant department director of Housing and Residential Life, Connie Thompson, said that there were reports of mold prior the outbreak. However, she added that she had never dealt with a mold problem of such scale in her 24 years of work.
A total of 16 rooms was found contaminated by the fungus. Students living in 50% of them had to transfer to other residence halls and University apartments to escape the mold effects and to give way to the treatment. It wasn’t determined yet when they could particularly get back to their rooms.
The initial sighting of the spores was reported on September 23. And as explained by Neil Carlson, a public health specialist from the University’s Environmental Health and Safety department, the cause of the infestation was the condensation produced by the hot and humid air outdoors getting inside the air-conditioned rooms.
As voiced-out by students, the outbreak surely caused them inconvenience. Nonetheless, they confirmed that clean-up has been implemented to the affected units.

“The humidity and heat during the University of Minnesota’s move-in caused a mold outbreak in Frontier Hall this fall.
