It can’t be denied that bed bugs are even more prevalent these days than few years ago. And so, in an effort to curb their spread, Philadelphia implemented a new policy regarding the disposal of bed-bug-infested mattresses.
The city patterned the policy from NYC. It particularly requires the residents to seal the mattress and the box spring in a protective bag before trashing them for pick-up. The purpose of it is to protect the neighborhood and the garbage collectors from direct contact with the critters.
However, according to one resident Vivian Van Story, who also works on the city’s solid waste and recycling council, the new rule, which took effect in February, wasn’t working.
Meanwhile, Andrew Dalzell, with the South of South Street Neighborhood Association, observed mixed results. He shared that several mattresses and a box spring dumped near his apartment were promptly picked-up while the ones on another blocked were left uncollected. Based on that, he said that an adjustment period is needed for the policy to truly work.
But if ever a non-bagged mattress was dumped and it was reported, Streets Commissioner Donald Carlton stated that an enforcement unit would be dispatched. He detailed that the crew will inspect and dispose it while dressed in a protective gear to avoid direct contact with the bed bugs.
