Bed bugs are rising in Bidderford in Maine. The city has recorded as many as ten bed bug reports in a week. And most of it took place in apartment complexes.
Because of that alarming bed bug increase, the City Council signed a new ordinance on Tuesday.
The bill basically allows local law code enforcers to impose a penalty to landlords and tenants failing to comply with Bidderford’s bed bug policy. But what does it specifically states?
Particularly, the new ordinance orders tenants to report bed bugs to landlords. Meanwhile, it obligates landlords to check on those bed bug cases within five days. It then compels both to work together to get rid of the pests. If anyone misses his part, the bill requires him or her to pay a $2,500 fine.
Along with Rhode Island, Maine is one of the only two New England states with laws against bed bugs.
