Bed bugs have reached Penn State. The university confirmed it on Wednesday.
According to the news, bed bugs were reported in the campus on Monday. They were particularly spotted in the school’s dormitory, Curtin Hall in the East Halls housing complex.

All the rooms in the said housing were inspected for the pests and three of them were treated, announced the university spokesperson Jill Shockey. The 40 children and chaperones from an outside organization who were staying in Curtin Hall until Tuesday were also informed of the pests’ presence, she added.

Moreover, Shockey stated that to any reports of bed bugs, Pennsylvania State University’s housing division is ready to respond “swiftly, openly and effectively” on her own words.

Bed bugs are small, sneaky and fast-paced. That and the fact their transfer is now easier, no thanks to the increase in travels, made every place vulnerable to their presence, including campuses and dormitories.
Because of that possibility of being infested always looming around, you’ve got to be ready to get rid of bed bugs. Otherwise, they’ll make you their blood bank. And in their wake, they’ll leave you with red and itchy bite marks.
But the question is, how could you eliminate those pesky insects? With their tiny size, even just finding them would be too hard.
Well, first off, let’s solve that problem about finding bed bugs. After all, you wouldn’t be able to kill them if you don’t see them, right? So, to find where they are, just know that they love to hide in cracks and gaps on items and surfaces. And so you could locate them faster, just follow the bed bug signs.
Those signs basically include the following.
- Fecal spots – these are small dark specks that they excrete

- Musty-sweet smell – foul yet sweet smell that they exude when they are in a group
Now to the part of eliminating bed bugs. You actually have several choices for a bed bug treatment method. However, of them, you have to go for the process that doesn’t compromise your health. What good is it to solve your bed bug problem if in return, your health, or even that of your family, is put at risk.
With that said, the use of conventional insecticides is therefore, out of your choices as it contains chemicals that are harmful to your health. Besides, a recent study found out that bed bugs have developed resistance for common pesticides.
You could just hire an exterminator instead for a heat treatment. The downside is that professional bed bug extermination is expensive. It cost at least $1000.
