A boarding house in Portsmouth, New Hampshire was seeking to renew its permit to operate. However, because of the bed bugs found in the building, things aren’t looking good for the management.
Due to previous incidents – discovery of dead body, bomb scare and service complaints – the City Council extends Brewster Street’s permit only in an interim basis rather than the usual one year. And the last approved extension it got was on December 16, which expired last Tuesday.

Given its permit’s expiration, the facility of 30 residents would like to get it renewed. The problem is that a recent inspection found bed bugs in the property. And with those critters degrading the living conditions in the housing, the approval of its permit would surely be dragged along.

In addition, the facility’s neighbors are also against its renewal of a full-year permit. The Islington Creek Neighborhood Association expressed that in its letter to the council and even stated there was yet another violent incident that took place in the said housing.

“The controversial Brewster Street boarding house goes before the City Council on Monday night seeking a renewal of its permit. One thing that could get in the way of that approval is the fact that bed bugs were found during a recent inspection of the facility.
The council has been reviewing the house’s operation since a dead body went undiscovered for days at the house in 2012. A few weeks later, there was a bomb scare. Police have also responded to dozens of calls for service there.”
