Mold hit Virginia’s Ridgeway Rescue Squad building. And needless to say, it caused the unit a number of problems, including thousands of expenses for damage repairs.
The fungus was discovered last year. According to squad president Darren Lockridge, there were 13 types of it found in the basement, kitchen and other areas of the building. Some of them, he added, were deemed harmful to health.
The poor construction of the building was determined as the root source of the spores’ presence. It caused water leaks, which eventually led to the major mold infestation.
In order to protect the health of the squad members, those areas affected were closed off. Also, the building’s dry wall was torn down and other de-construction works were done to stop the fungus from spreading and causing worse problems.
About $60,000 to $80,000 was already spent by the rescue workers to get those works done. The Henry County Board of Supervisors also allocated $95,000 to help the squad. Nonetheless, some $200,000 worth of remaining repairs was still needed. And with the donation not enough, the unit continues to raise fund.
