Since their big comeback some 10 years ago, bed bugs have spread so wide and fast. But though knowledge about them has increased over the years, still they continue to become even more prevalent.
And so, to come up with a bed bug elimination method that is even more effective than ones available today, Michael Z. Levy, PhD, assistant professor in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB), along with his colleagues, conducted a new study. Its findings were published on January 8 in the Journal of Medical Entomology.
The research particularly traced the seasonal trends of the critters and mapped out their hotspots in Philadelphia. It lasted for four years from 2008 up to 2012 and specifically used the phone calls to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health’s Vector Control Services to determine when and where the bed bug infestation usually takes place.
Generally, the study discovered that in the Philadelphia, the bed bug increase is at a steady rate of 4.5 percent per month or about 70 percent every year. Moreover, it found out that the critters tend to infest more the southern part of the city. And with regards to the seasonal pattern of their infestation, it was determined that they peak during the warm August and reach the lowest during the cold February.

“There is surprisingly very little known about seasonal trends among bed bug populations,” said Michael Z. Levy, PhD, assistant professor in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB), who mapped the bed bug hotspots in Philadelphia in an effort to find more effective ways to control them. “We found a steep and significant seasonal cycle in bed bug reporting, and suspect that bed bugs have different levels of mobility depending on the season, and that their population size may fluctuate throughout the year.”
