Mold has been associated with a lot of health problems. And recently, another one was added on them – Parkinson’s Disease.
The link between the fungus and the disease was discovered by the researchers from Rutgers, thanks to the notion of sick-building syndrome that all started from New Orleans home of Joan Bennett. Their finding was published on November 11, 2013 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

But what did the researchers exactly learn? How is mold associated with Parkinson’s Disease?
Particularly, the pioneers of the study found out that a certain chemical released by a mold called “mushroom alcohol”causes symptoms characterizing Parkinson’s Disease in fruit flies. Among those symptoms include tremors, slow gait, postural imbalance and problems with locomotion. In light of this, one of the researchers of the study started looking into the mold from Hurricane-Sandy-affected homes for any similar effects on health.

Moreover, they discovered that the chemical blocks two important genes as well. And that basically guides doctors and pharmacist in developing a medicine that will protect them.
Here is a part of the report about the Link Between Mold and Parkinson’s Disease from nj.com.
“Rutgers researchers have discovered that a volatile chemical emitted by mold can trigger symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in fruit flies.
The finding lends credence to notion that people can be affected by so-called “sick building syndrome.
Their finding was published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. ”
