Bed bugs aren’t health threats. However, they could have you hassling with their itchy biting. In addition, they could also leave you financially struggling. And that financial struggle is currently being experienced by Torres Shelter in California.
In mid-October, the housing was fumigated to get rid of bed bugs. That treatment cost the shelter $11,500. Officials took the money for it from the facility’s deferred maintenance account, which was prepared for major building repairs. Because of that, Shelter Supervisor Bill Slack said that if any problem hit the housing yet again, it would be very difficult for them to cover the costing.

And so, to prevent more spending, the shelter is working hard to prevent a re-infestation of the critters. It adopted new bed bug policies, which includes physical inspection among guests to ensure that none of those crawlies hitched on them. Also, they were just allowed to bring a change of clothes and a paperback book inside the building. The rest of their belongings has to be in storage units outside the facility until they are treated.

But though those new rules to prevent bed bugs were working, they were also increasing the shelter’s spending. The payment of $140 for the storage site per month and the cost of garbage bags for the guests’ belongings were accumulating and causing more money problems.
