A report has it that spots of the fungus were discovered in some 3000 books of the said library. It was the librarians who first noticed them while they were shelving, it was stated.

But besides the summer rains, a broken air compressor was also to be blamed for the library mold predicament. Because it stopped working, the humidity wasn’t kept out of the building thus majorly contributing to the $40,000 worth of a problem.

Due to the immediate response, the library is now clear of mold. However, many of the damaged books had to also be thrown. And to help with the high cost of replacing them, several communities donated some amounts. Among them are the “Friends of the Library” and Women’s League, which donated $15,000 and $1,000 respectively.

“The non-stop summer rains have deluged the Temple Terrace library in a perfect storm of problems.

They sprouted when librarians noticed something unusual on the books there.

“As they were going around shelving, they noticed some of the books had what looked like spots on it,” said library director Armand Turnak.”
