It was in July just this year when Maxine Lewis Memorial Shelter had its first encounter with the tiny blood-feeding bed bugs. Back then, the facility had to transfer its clients to resolve the problem. But even after the steps taken, its seems that the pests are not done yet.
Recently, the said facility was again infested by the vampire-like crawlies. As a result, the management was forced to shut down half of the shelter indefinitely.
The latest infestation took place at the back part of the facility. Particularly, it was in the dorm-type room for men where 22 beds were located. To prevent the spread of the pests, the room was sealed off until treatment is implemented.
Eggs and adult bed bugs were specifically found in the wooden bunks of the San Luis Obispo based homeless shelter. But though that’s the case, Dee Torres, homeless services coordinator for Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County, said that replacing the 25 wooden bunk beds is costly. Approximately, it would cost the shelter $50,000.
So far, the facility already spent more than $20,000 to get rid of bed bugs.

“Bedbugs have once again invaded the Maxine Lewis Memorial Shelter in San Luis Obispo, forcing shelter staff to close half of the facility indefinitely.
This is the third time the 50-bed shelter has had to turn people away since the pesky bugs were first discovered at the shelter July 8.
