Bed bugs‘ bite marks are some of the things that give away their presence. And so, when those were seen on one of Heritage Elementary School’s students, the administration decided to take the child out of the school for the moment.
Superintendent of Carter County Schools, Ronnie Dotson, said that the child was at school when the problem was discovered. He added that the district’s policy to such a case is that the student cannot return to school until the problem is solved. So, the kid was temporarily pulled out of class to assure parents that the bed bug protocol is followed.
The district does regular extermination of insects at schools. However, Dotson said that for this particular case, no extra treatment was implemented as there was only one child involved.
Nonetheless, an inspection was still implemented in the school by Little Sandy Health Department located in Grayson. The nursing director of the department named Trena Greene and an environmentalist conducted the visual inspection on the classrooms and the library where the student had gone.
As Greene recounted, they also checked the areas that could serve as bed bugs’ hiding spots. Their work, she said, started on August 19 after the bed bug bites were discovered on the child on the 19th. Moreover, she added that they also did a presentation on bed bugs for the school staff for the awareness about the problem.
