Some 50 or 60 years ago, DDT or dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane was the widely used insecticide to kill bed bugs and other harmful insects. And according to records, it was an effective solution to control the pests’ population. However, besides being effective, it was also destructive.
In 1962, it was suggested in a book published by Rachel Carson entitled Silent Spring that DDT could cause cancer. It also documented its other negative impacts to the environment, particularly, to birds. And as a result of the environmental awareness it created, DDT was banned.

Based on a report about a recent study from the University of Kentucky, bed bugs have developed resistance to the common pesticides used on them. Basically, they developed harder exoskeleton and metabolic enzyme that break down the toxins to resist the chemical solutions.

According to a recent report, another study has rediscovered one natural and effective technique to get rid of the pests. The said method was used several years ago by Eastern Europeans.
Published in the Journal of the Royal Society Inferface, the said bed bug elimination method basically refers to the use of bean leaves. The leaves were spread around the bed and used as traps to catch the pests. They have microscopic hairs called trichomes that hook bed bugs on their weakest parts, which is the back of their legs, thereby trapping them for good. And as archeologists have discovered, those used leaves were then burned to eliminate the pests for good.

“But a method used long ago provides an effective and non-toxic weapon against the pests, according to a U.S. study in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface. The authors looked into the once-common Eastern European practice of spreading bean leaves around a bed to control bedbugs. What they found was fascinating.
“During the night, bed bugs walking on the floor would accumulate on these bean leaves, which were collected and burned the following morning to exterminate the bed bugs.”
